Canterbury Cupolas: About the Roof
The Copper Roof of the Canterbury Cupola is both visually appealing and structurally sound. The Pagoda Style roof makes a great accent piece to homes with long sloping architectural lines. The copper roof is made from 16-ounce 24-gauge copper, and comes unfinished, so the roof will patina overtime. Supporting the copper roof, is a wooden base treated to withstand moisture, rotting, and insect damage.
Canterbury Cupolas: About the Mid-Section
The mid-section of these vinyl cupolas features a Louvered Arch Top. The mid-section is constructed of high quality PVC, which is more durable and rugged than natural wood. In addition to the strength, the vinyl construction allows for a virtually maintenance-free product. Please note that the vinyl can be painted to match the exterior of your home, but it will need to be primed first, with a vinyl primer. The horizontal and vertical slats are angled to admit light and air, but to keep out rain and direct sunshine.
Canterbury Cupolas: About the Base
The Smooth Vinyl Base of the Canterbury Cupola offers owners simplicity and functionality The base of this Canterbury Cupola is designed to accept a 12/12 pitch (12" rise per foot). However if the roof pitch is steeper than a 12/12 pitch, you will need to include an extension base to the order. The product includes all instructions and hardware needed for installation.
Canterbury Cupolas: Attaching a Weathervane
The Canterbury Cupola comes weathervane ready. The top of the cupola has a hole, which can accept up to a 1" weathervane or finial post. In addition, inside the roof, there is a bracket which will attach the weathervane post to the cupola for added protection. Due to the height to width ratio of all castle cupolas, we do recommend purchasing an extension post for your weathervane. Please refer to the related items towards the bottom of this page.
Canterbury Cupolas: What Size is Right for Your Home
In selecting the right size Cupola for a building, here is a good rule of thumb to follow: use 1.5 inches of cupola for every foot of unbroken roofline. The key here is the unbroken roofline measurement. For example: if a roof section measures 24 feet, the minimum cupola size should be approximately 36 inches square. For a more dramatic effect, or if a cupola larger than 60" square is needed, consider using two cupolas on the roofline. When using more than one cupola per roofline, here is a good rule of thumb to follow: use 1 inch of cupola for every foot of unbroken roofline. For example: if a roof section measures 24 feet, the minimum size of each cupola should be approximately 24 inches square.
